The drum wood chipper Machine is a high-performance wood processing machine designed to convert logs, branches, wood waste, bamboo, and other biomass materials into uniform wood chips. These chips are widely used in particle board production, fiberboard manufacturing, paper pulping, and biomass fuel applications.
With strong structure, stable performance, and large processing capacity, the drum wood chipper machine has become an essential equipment in modern wood recycling and biomass industries.
What is a Drum Wood Chipper Machine Used For?
This machine can process a wide range of raw materials, including:
- Logs and trunks
- Tree branches and wood residues
- Waste wood boards and pallets
- Bamboo and agricultural stalks
- Veneers and wood offcuts
After processing, the output wood chips can be used in:
- Particle board and MDF production
- Paper and pulp industry
- Biomass energy fuel
- Animal bedding and landscaping mulch

Working Principle of Drum Style Wood Chipper
The wood is fed into the machine through the feeding inlet. When it reaches the cutting zone, the high-speed rotating drum with multiple flying knives slices the wood into chips.
- The drum rotates at high speed
- Flying knives cut the wood continuously
- Screen holes control chip size
- Oversized pieces are re-cut inside the machine
- Qualified chips are discharged from the bottom outlet
This continuous cutting process ensures stable output and high efficiency.

Structure of Drum-Type Wood Chipper Machine
The drum wood chipper is mainly composed of the body frame, knife roll, feeding system, hydraulic system, and transmission components.
Machine Body
The body is welded from high-strength steel plates, providing a stable and durable foundation for the whole machine.

Knife Roll (Drum)
The knife roll is the core cutting part. It is equipped with 2, 3, or 4 flying knives. Each knife is firmly fixed on the drum using pressure blocks, ensuring safe and stable cutting performance.

Hydraulic System
The hydraulic system is powered by an oil pump and performs several key functions:
- Opens the cover for easy blade replacement
- Lifts the upper feeding roller for maintenance
- Adjusts the gap between flying knife and bottom knife
- Facilitates assembly and disassembly of comb plates
This system greatly improves maintenance efficiency and safety.

Upper and Lower Feeding Mechanism
The feeding system includes:
- Feeding inlet
- Upper and lower feeding rollers
- Feeding gap adjustment device
Wood entering the inlet is compressed by the rollers and fed into the cutting system at a controlled speed. This ensures uniform chip size and stable operation.
When processing thicker wood, the feeding gap can be adjusted to handle larger diameter logs efficiently.

What Is the Difference Between a Drum Wood Chipper and a Disc Wood Chipper?
Both drum chippers and disc wood chippers are common wood chipping equipment, but they differ significantly in structure, suitable raw materials, and application scenarios. A drum wood chipper adopts a drum-type cutting structure, offering stronger feeding capability and better suitability for processing branches, logs, wood pallets, waste wood, and other complex materials. It features high capacity and stable continuous operation, making it widely used in biomass fuel production, wood recycling, and comprehensive wood processing industries.
In contrast, a disc wood chipper mainly uses a rotating disc knife structure and is more suitable for processing regular logs. It produces more uniform wood chips and is commonly used in paper mills and industries with higher requirements for chip quality.
